Selling a used boat with a service record
Every used boat sale is a negotiation about unknowns. The seller knows the boat; the buyer knows a survey and a hunch. A service record moves the boat out of the unknown column — and that is worth money, speed and a calmer sale.
What buyers are really asking
A service record answers all six before the question is asked. That changes the tone of the whole viewing.
- Has the engine been serviced on schedule, and at what hours?
- When were the anodes, impeller, belts and filters last changed?
- Has the rig been inspected, and by whom?
- Is the safety equipment in date?
- What has gone wrong, and was it fixed properly or patched?
- What has this boat cost to run each year?
Prepare the record before you list
- 1Go through the last three seasons and make sure every job is entered, dated and costed.
- 2Attach receipts and yard invoices to the entries they belong to.
- 3Upload manuals for engine, electronics and major equipment.
- 4Close or clearly mark any open planned items — an honest 'due next spring' reads better than a gap.
- 5Add photos: engine bay, hull out of the water, rig, interior.
Be honest about the open items
A record showing a known issue with a planned fix builds more trust than a suspiciously perfect list. Buyers price surprises harshly and disclosed issues fairly.
Show it as one link, not a folder
Send prospective buyers a single link to the boat's history instead of a chaotic email of scans. It is easier for them, it makes the boat look cared for, and it lets serious buyers do their homework before travelling to see it.
Hand the history over at closing
When the sale completes, transfer the boat's record to the new owner in Boat.Life. The service book, logbook, manuals and photos follow the hull, and your own account keeps the boats you owned in your history. The buyer starts with a full picture instead of a blank page — and the next sale of that boat is stronger too.
If a yard did the work, let it show
Entries created by a connected service company carry the company's name. Professional work that is visibly attributed to the yard that did it is far more persuasive than a line of text typed by the seller.
